The high alpine crest of the Bitterroot Mountains forms a natural boundary on this Montana-Idaho border survey, where the Lolo National Forest meets the Clearwater National Forest. The landscape is dominated by significant peaks and ridges, including the prominent Rhodes Peak and the high elevation points of Blacklead Mtn and Shale Mtn. A network of water sources feeds the surrounding valleys, with Kelly Creek and its various forks—Middle Fork, North Fork, and South Fork—draining the northern slopes. Higher in the cirques, small mountain waters like Smokey Lake, Leo Lake, and Goat Lake are situated below the rocky outcrops of Kellys Sister and Kellys Finger. To the south, the Williams Range and Toboggan Ridge overlook Billy Rhodes Creek, illustrating the complex drainage patterns of this high-country wilderness.
