Rogers Lake (Dry) and the arid stretches of the Mojave Desert dominate this 1930s landscape, surveyed just before the era of intensive military expansion. The desert floor is marked by the presence of the Muroc Bombing and Gunnery Range, a precursor to the major aerospace testing facilities that would later define this region. The Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad cuts across the basin, supporting small stops like Fluhr Siding, Solon Siding, and the early settlement at Muroc.
