About this map

The timber-rich landscape along the Vernon Parish Beauregard Parish line is defined by its transition from an earlier logging era to a more established agricultural and transportation corridor. The Kansas City Southern railway and Highway No 171 serve as the primary north-south spine, connecting the settlement of Rosepine to Neame. Evidence of the region's industrial past is visible in several stretches of Old Logging Railroad Grade that branch away from the main line toward the swampy bottomlands of Bayou Anacoco. Rural life in the mid-1930s (when field examinations were conducted) centered around dispersed institutions such as Walnut Grove Ch, Cypress Creek Ch, and the Miller Cem. This sheet captures the intricate drainage network of the Piney Woods, including Pocosin Creek, Clear Creek, and Nichols Creek, which dictated the placement of early homesteads and roads.
