The Shenandoah River snakes through the center of this landscape, defining the borderlands of the Blue Ridge as they spill into the Loudoun Valley. On the West Virginia side, the river’s bends frame historic clusters like Kabletown and Meyerstown, while the ridge itself is dominated by the Appalachian National Scenic Trail as it follows the state line through Wilson Gap.

A network of farm springs highlights the unique hydrogeology of the area, including the Shannondale Blue Sulphur Spring, Shannondale Red Sulphur Spring, and Shannondale White Sulphur Spring near the riverside settlement of Shannondale.
