The high plains of the Oglala National Grassland define this corner of Sioux County, where the settlement of Joder sits along Toadstool Rd. This 2017 survey reveals a landscape of working ranches and conservation lands, centered on the prominent heights of Roundtop and Pine Butte. The local geography is etched by the drainage of Big Cottonwood Cr and Little Cottonwood Cr, which feed a series of water storage sites including Norman Reservoir and Speas Reservoir. Genealogists may find interest in the Union Star Cem located in the southern portion of the quadrangle near Cottonwood Rd. The topography is particularly striking near the Sioux and Dawes County line, where the Mike Kern Hills and Cedar Canyon mark the transition toward the Nebraska Badlands.
