The Sabinal River carves through the limestone breaks of the Edwards Plateau along the boundary of Real and Bandera counties. This 2019 survey documents a landscape defined by deep drainages and named canyon systems, notably the namesake Sabinal Canyon and Cottonwood Canyon. Water sources are the primary landmarks in this arid environment, ranging from the isolated Flatrock Spring in the northeast to Pelaez Lake further south.
