The high-altitude drainage basins of the San Isabel National Forest dominate this terrain, where the peaks of the Sawatch Range and the Collegiate Peaks define the horizon. High mountain water sources including Pomeroy Lake, Upper Pomeroy Lake, and Baldwin Lake feed a network of steep watercourses such as Chalk Cr and Grizzly Gulch.

Evidence of historical access to these remote elevations is preserved in the path of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trl and the Poplar Gulch Trl, which navigate the slopes of summits like Grizzly Mtn, Tabeguache Peak, and Cronin Peak.
