The street grid of Saint John marks the southeastern corner of this Stafford County landscape, where the town's northern expansion meets the open agricultural plains. A dense network of section-line roads, including Zook Rd and Eden Valley Rd, organizes the terrain into a productive patchwork typical of the Kansas prairie. Natural drainage patterns interrupt the geometry of the road system, as several seasonal waterways move across the county. The course of Rattlesnake Cr and the various branches of Wild Horse Cr and Little Wild Horse Cr create distinct breaks in the otherwise flat topography. These creeks, along with Bear Cr, represent the primary water sources for the area's agricultural operations and define the subtle elevation changes shown through the 10-foot contour intervals.
