About this map

Rio Grande and Rio Chama waters converge in this Rio Arriba County landscape, defining a network of centuries-old irrigation systems and agricultural settlements. The map highlights the significant presence of the San Juan Pueblo, also labeled as Ohkay Owingeh, alongside the historic Old San Juan site. Traditional land use is evident through the extensive system of ditches, including the Los Luceros Ditch, Alcalde La Villita Ditch, and Hernandez Ditch, which channel water across the valley floor. To the west, the prominent landform of Black Mesa overlooks the river valley and the scattered communities of Chamita, El Duende, and Hernandez. The southern portion of the sheet reveals the northern edge of Española and the Northern New Mexico Coll campus. This document illustrates a region where Pueblo heritage and Spanish colonial settlement patterns remain deeply integrated with the natural hydrography.
