Sand Hollow and the surrounding high desert plateau of Crook County are defined by a complex network of ephemeral water sources and seasonal drainages. The landscape is characterized by prominent geological features such as Steens Ridge and the Sherman Rim, which rise above a series of canyons and draws including Sheep Head Canyon and Bedell Canyon. Water management is central to this arid environment, evidenced by numerous named improvements like Furnace Waterhole, Divide Waterhole, and South Dagus Reservoir. These features, alongside Soda Spring, suggest a history of livestock grazing and land use where every reliable spring and catchment was critical for survival and operations. In the southern portion of the quadrangle, the S Fork Crooked River and Sand Hollow Cr serve as the primary topographic focal points, while Se Gi RD and Price Twelvemile RD provide the essential transit corridors through this isolated section of central Oregon.
