Capitol Reef National Park dominates the southwestern portion of this landscape, where the dramatic geologic uplift of the Water Pocket Fold creates a sharp divide in the terrain. The map details a complex drainage system defined by Oak Creek and Sandy Creek, the latter featuring a distinctive bend known as the Elbow of the Sandy. Between these watercourses lie the expansive Sandy Creek Benches, a series of elevated flats that separate the deep incisions of North Coleman Canyon and Divide Canyon.
