The San Joaquin Valley landscape south of Central Valley is defined by a sophisticated network of agricultural water management systems. A series of engineered waterways, including the Sharon Lateral, Benedict Lateral, and Lateral Five, crisscross the grid of rural roads to support the local farming economy. These channels integrate with natural hydrologic features like the meandering Mariposa Slough and Chamberlain Slough, which drain toward Turner Island in the southwestern portion of the map.
