Santiam Junction serves as the focal point of this high-elevation landscape in the Cascade Range, where the modern highway network meets the traces of historic passage. The map documents the convergence of the N Santiam Hwy and S Santiam Hwy near the Santiam Junction State Airport. A significant piece of pioneer history is visible in the south, where the Old Santiam Wagon Rd skirts the base of Sand Mtn, representing the 19th-century route through the mountains. Volcanic features dominate the terrain, from the prominent Nash Crater and Little Nash Crater to the distinct profiles of Hoodoo Butte and Hogg Rock. The area is densely packed with alpine water bodies including Duffy Lake, Santiam Lake, and the headwaters at Clear Lake, all situated within the protected boundaries of the Willamette National Forest.
