
The Columbia River serves as the focal point of this landscape, carving a wide path through the arid terrain of Franklin and Benton counties. Along its eastern banks, the distinctive Ringold Flat and Savage Island demonstrate the complex riparian environments preserved within the Hanford Reach National Monument. The terrain rises sharply to the north and west into the Saddle Mountain National Wildlife Refuge, where the steep escarpments overlook the river valley below.
