Kaplan sits at the northern edge of this coastal prairie landscape, where the Southern Pacific railroad meets the State Southern Highway No 25. The 1930s field examination reveals a highly engineered agricultural environment defined by an extensive network of waterways, including the Abbeville Canal, Isle Marrone Canal, and Sledge Canal. This system supported local agriculture through infrastructure like the Liberty Farm Pumping Sta and the Dog Island Pump Sta further south.
