Sheridan Wells and the mining interests of the Carbonate Group mark this high-desert landscape in the southwest corner of New Mexico. The topography is defined by the steep eastern slopes of the Big Hatchet Mountains and the drainage network of New Well Draw and New Well Canyon. The presence of the Lead Queen mine suggests a history of mineral extraction in a region where water management was paramount for survival and industry.
