Looking Glass Rock and the high ridges of the Pisgah National Forest define this landscape along the Eastern Continental Divide. The area is marked by a network of drainage systems, notably the East Fork Pigeon River and the Davidson River, which carve through the high-elevation terrain. This 2011 survey documents the established recreational infrastructure of the early 21st century, including the Shining Rock Parking Area, Cove Creek Campground, and multiple backcountry refuges such as the Butter Gap Shelter and Deep Gap Shelter.
