The Siskiyou National Forest dominates this section of the Oregon coast range, where the steep canyons of the Illinois River define the terrain. Within the protected bounds of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness, the landscape remains largely inaccessible except by foot, marked by a network of paths such as the Silver Peak - Hobson Horn Trail Trl and the Illinois River Trl. High-elevation openings in the timber, including Silver Prairie and Little Bald Mountain Prairie, offer distinct breaks in the forest cover, while Silver Peak and Bald Mtn serve as prominent regional landmarks.
