Bucknum lies near the southwestern corner of this Natrona County landscape, where the prairie begins to transition toward the high plains. The area is defined by an intricate network of drainage systems, most notably the winding paths of the N Fork Casper Cr and Middle Fork Casper Cr. These watercourses are complemented by several significant erosional features such as Hemingway Draw and Statzer Draw, which carve through the namesake Smith Flats.
