Grapevine Mountain dominates the southern portion of this late-nineteenth-century survey of the Smyrna area, representing a snapshot of the Ozark foothills under the direction of J.W. Powell. This specific sheet provides a detailed view of the drainage patterns of Illinois Creek and its major tributaries, including the East Fork and the winding course of Hurricane Cr.

Produced in collaboration with the Geol. Survey of Arkansas, the topography here reflects a landscape defined by sharp elevations and narrow creek valleys before modern development. Because much of the upper portion of the quadrangle remains unsurveyed on this specific sheet, the focus is concentrated entirely on the watercourses and landforms that shaped early settlement in this part of Pope County.
