The Hot Springs Mountains dominate the northwestern quadrant of this terrain, transitioning sharply into the low-lying basins of the Fortymile Desert to the southeast. This 2021 topographic survey reveals a landscape defined by dramatic elevation shifts and ephemeral water features typical of the Great Basin region. Near the southern edge of the map, Massie Slough represents a critical hydrologic point where drainage patterns meet the desert floor. The grid of the Public Land Survey System, including sections within t21n r27e and t22n r27e, provides the primary human organization over a largely uninhabited expanse of Churchill County. Researchers will find a clear record of the intersection between high-desert mountain ranges and the arid flats that challenged early western travel.
