Sonoma Canyon and the high peaks of the Sonoma Range dominate this high-desert landscape on the border of Humboldt and Pershing counties. The terrain is defined by a series of dramatic drainages including Dry Canyon, Mullen Canyon, and the deeply incised Elbow Canyon, all carved into the western slopes of the range. Lower elevations in the west show a distinct transition from wilderness to a rural road network, where the waters of Sonoma Cr eventually meet the valley floor.
