East Spanish Peak and West Spanish Peak dominate this landscape on the boundary of Huerfano and Las Animas counties. Much of the southern half of the map is protected within the San Isabel National Forest, featuring the massive geologic formation known as the Big Wall. The map reveals a history of early mountain education and recreation, preserved through the site of the Wahatoya School and the Santa Fe Trail Council Camp.

Water sources are vital in this high-altitude environment, with Wahatoya Creek, Bear Lake, and numerous Springs feeding the steep drainages. Traces of industrial and personal history appear in isolated locations, such as the Bullseye Mine and a lone Grave south of McDonald Spring. The intricate network of canyons, including Long Canyon and Schultz Canyon, illustrates the complex drainage patterns that define this section of the Southern Rockies during the mid-to-late 20th century.
