Meares sits in the northern reaches of the Modoc National Forest, a landscape defined by volcanic landforms and forest service infrastructure. The area is dominated by significant elevations such as Spaulding Butte and Damons Butte, the latter of which features several named spurs and the nearby Damons Cave. The drainage and water management of this high-country terrain are evident through features like Whitney Reservoir, Mud Lake, and the Cannon Tank station.
