Square Butte rises above the high plains of western Golden Valley County, providing a prominent natural landmark within the surrounding Little Missouri National Grassland. The landscape is defined by the drainage patterns of Garner Creek and its tributary Fisher Run, which carve through the terrain as they flow toward the north and east. In the southern reaches of the quadrangle, Dry Creek cuts across the prairie, illustrating the intermittent water sources that have long shaped land use in this part of North Dakota.
