Catlow Valley dominates the northern reaches of this high-desert landscape in Harney County, characterized by a vast basin of alkaline flats and ephemeral water bodies like Slickey Lake. The terrain shifts dramatically to the south and east where the Catlow Rim and the Basque Hills rise above the basin floor, reflecting the region's volcanic and tectonic history. This 2017 survey reveals a remote landscape managed for water access, evidenced by scattered improvements such as the Rock Knoll Reservoir, Pueblo Reservoir, and the Chukar Guzzler. Named springs, including Lee Morris Spring and McDade Cache Spring, mark vital water points in an otherwise arid environment. The presence of CCC RD and Funnel Canyon Rd provides the primary transit network through the foothills of Square Mountain, where several seasonal drainages like Square Mountain Cr and Box Canyon Cr originate.
