Glacial depressions and marshy wetlands define this portion of the Prairie Coteau, where Stangland Slough and Opitz Lake occupy a landscape dotted with numerous unnamed potholes and basins. The 1970 landscape reflects a transition toward conservation, dominated by multiple blocks of the National Wildlife Management Area and State Wildlife Management Area. These protected zones are interspersed with the township divisions of Independence and Liberty.
