Warm Springs Valley and the expansive alkaline basins of Harney County define this high-desert landscape. The hydrology of the region is a complex network of intermittent water bodies and man-made irrigation structures, including Stinking Lake, Tyler Lake, and Windmill Pond. Evidence of early agricultural development is visible through the Saint Clair Canal and Goulden Canal, which cut across the lowlands to manage the scarce water supply for ranching operations.
