Lake Ontario dominates the western horizon of this Jefferson County shoreline, where the strategic peninsula of Stony Point reaches into the water. In the early 1940s, this landscape was defined by the dual presence of maritime navigation and wartime military preparation. The Stony Point Light House stands at the tip of the headland, while a significant portion of the interior is occupied by the U. S. Military Reservation Stony Point Rifle Range.

The irregular coast is marked by numerous indentations including Gravely Bay, Boomer Cove, and Ray Bay, providing a detailed look at the interface between the township of Henderson and the lake. This survey, compiled in part from aerial photography by the Tennessee Valley Authority for the Army Corps of Engineers, preserves the exact road network and woodland patterns of the area just as the United States entered World War II.
