Mendocino National Forest defines the western half of this landscape, where the rugged slopes of Black Diamond Ridge and Elephant Hill descend toward the fertile basins of the east. The settlement of Stonyford sits at the southern edge of the quadrangle near the confluence of several drainages, serving as a gateway between the mountainous forest and the valley ranchlands. The topography is dominated by a series of parallel ridges, including Auk Auk Ridge and Gravelly Ridge, which channel the flow of Stony Creek and Little Stony Cr.
