The Colorado River carves a deep path through the Garfield County landscape, framed by the towering Grand Hogback and the summit of Storm King Mountain. This early 1960s survey documents a rugged corridor where transportation and water management are the primary drivers of settlement. The Denver and Rio Grande Western railroad tracks follow the river's northern bank, passing the small community of Chacra and the riverside Okanela Lodge.

Evidence of early agricultural engineering is prominent, with the Vulcan Ditch and the Wolverton and Chenoweth Ditch diverting water from the river to support local holdings. Further north, the Canyon Creek Sch serves the families living along Canyon Creek, while numerous jeep trails, stock driveways, and pack trails spiderweb across the high country, including the slopes of Horse Mountain. The map also captures several mining operations, including a marked Mine south of the river and a Gaging Sta near the Aqueduct.
