The Bitterroot Range forms a jagged natural boundary along the Idaho-Montana state line, separating Shoshone and Clearwater counties from Mineral County. This high-elevation wilderness is defined by its glaciated cirques and alpine basins, which hold remote water bodies like Heart Lake, Pearl Lake, and the cluster of Trio Lakes. The landscape is protected within the overlapping territories of Lolo National Forest and Clearwater National Forest, where peaks such as Lightning Peak and Crater Mtn rise above the deep drainages of Slate Cr and French Cr. Notable for its lack of modern development, the area is accessible primarily through a network of trails and Forest Service routes that navigate landforms like Buckos Pocket and Goose Ridge. Researchers will find a preserved wilderness where the drainages of the N Fork Fish Cr and Straight Cr have remained largely unchanged for decades.
