The Snake River defines the border between Oregon and Idaho in this 2024 landscape, its waters slowed and widened at the northern edge by Brownlee Reservoir. This rugged canyon corridor is marked by steep drainage systems like Skookum Chuck Creek and Ruth Gulch that feed into the river from the high country. On the Idaho side, the Payette National Forest covers the eastern slopes, where the Hitt Mountains rise above the river valley.
