Baird Glacier and the frozen expanse of the Witches Cauldron dominate this high-altitude Alaskan landscape, where the ice fields of the Tongass National Forest meet the international border. The survey, based on aerial photography from 1948 and 1961, documents a terrain of extreme geological features including the Devils Thumb and the distinctive twin peaks of the Cats Ears.

Southward, the Patterson Glacier and the Cosmos Range frame a network of drainage systems like Cascade Creek and Scenery Creek, which flows from Scenery Lake.
