Swan Valley and the neighboring settlement of Irwin are centered along the fertile corridor of the Snake River in Bonneville County. The landscape is defined by the sharp transition from the river valley to the surrounding uplands of the Targhee National Forest and Caribou National Forest. Numerous family-named canyons and benches, such as Pine Creek Bench and Shurtliff Canyon, provide evidence of historical land use and grazing in the high country.
