The northern edge of the Navajo National Monument marks the southeastern corner of this landscape, where the dramatic depths of Keet Seel Canyon meet the high, dissected reach of Skeleton Mesa. This is a terrain defined by significant vertical relief, characterized by the massive landforms of the Shonto Plateau and Zilnez Mesa in the west. A network of high-desert water sources supports the area, including Oat Spring, Hawks Nest Spring, and Deer Spring. The drainage patterns are complex, with the Last End Wash and Nokai Cr cutting through deep corridors like Nokai Canyon. This 2018 survey illustrates the relationship between these natural barriers and sparse modern infrastructure, such as Indian Rte 6310, which follows the contours of Sage Valley and Cattle Canyon in the northwest.
