Cheohee and Tamassee anchor this corner of the Blue Ridge foothills, where the Georgia-South Carolina border is defined by the Chattooga River and its East Fork. The landscape is characterized by a series of prominent peaks and gaps including Chattooga Ridge, Mill Mtn, and the high basin of Moody Cove. Several dramatic cascades, such as Spoonauger Falls and Kings Creek Falls, drain these heights toward the river corridor.

Genealogists will find a high density of small family and community burial sites scattered throughout the terrain, from Winchester Cem and Pelis Cem in the north to the Green Cem and Whitmire Cem closer to the local settlements. Much of the land is preserved within the Sumter National Forest and the Chattahoochee National Forest, which surround established recreation areas and mountain landmarks like Rock Gorge and White Rock Knob.
