About this map

Teshekpuk Lake dominates this Arctic coastal region within the Naval Petroleum Reserve No 4, a vast expanse defined by its intricate drainage patterns and seasonal transportation routes. Surveyed in the mid-1950s and published in 1964, the map traces the meandering paths of the Ikpikpuk River, Chipp River, and Miguakiak River as they flow north toward the Beaufort Sea. Along the coast, aviation and cold-war era logistics are marked by the Lonely Aerodrome and the Pitt Point Landing Strips (Site). Human presence is sparse, represented by the settlement at Anakruak and various isolated cabins scattered across the tundra. The reliance on frozen conditions is evident in the inclusion of the Winter Trail and Tractor Trail, which provided essential ground access across the water-logged landscape before the thaw.
