Gallatin National Forest dominates this section of the high Gallatin Range, where the boundary between Gallatin and Park counties traverses high ridgelines and drainage divides. The topography is defined by the convergence of several complex stream systems, including the headwaters of Cottonwood Cr and its various forks, alongside the lower reaches of Big Cr and Bark Cabin Cr. These drainages create a landscape of steep elevation changes, punctuated by high-altitude features such as Crater Lake and the prominent peaks of The Sentinel and The Bear.
