Saint George River serves as the central artery of this coastal Maine landscape, winding through a series of historic peninsulas and coves. The settlement of Thomaston sits at the head of the river's estuary, where the landscape transitions from the higher ground of Limestone Hill and Benner Hill toward the tidal waters. This 2014 survey documents a deeply rooted community infrastructure, evidenced by numerous burial grounds including The Village Cem and N Parish Cemeteries near the town of Saint George. Along the eastern shore, the Weskeag River separates South Thomaston from the rugged coastline of Spruce Head, where the maritime influence of the Atlantic Ocean is most pronounced. Local industrial history is preserved through features such as the Eagle Quarry near Harrington Cove, while the estate of Montpelier remains a landmark near the junction of Us-1.
