1907 Map of Tonopah

About this map

Arc Dome and the high Toiyabe Range anchor this 1907 survey of Central Nevada, a landscape defined by the rapid rise and fall of mining districts. The map captures the industrial network at its peak, centered on the vital connection between the Goldfield RR and the Goldfield and Tonopah line meeting at Millers. This transportation corridor served a scattering of hard-rock camps and cattle outposts, from the established boomtown of Manhattan to the already-fading Berlin and the "no water" stop at Pactolus. The presence of several abandoned sites, such as Downeyville and Craig Sta, illustrates the volatility of early 20th-century settlement in Big Smoky Valley and the surrounding basins. Along the edges of the salt flats, specialized industry is visible at the Borax Works near the Monte Cristo Range.
