Alvord Desert dominates the northern reaches of this high-desert landscape in Harney County, where the transition from flat alkali basin to rising topography is marked by notable geological breaks. The geography is defined by seasonal water sources and distinct landforms such as Big Sand Gap and Little Sand Gap to the east. Evidence of human presence and historical settlement patterns is concentrated in the southwest near the Tule Springs Ruins and the namesake Tule Springs. These features suggest a reliance on reliable desert water sources in an otherwise arid environment. To the southeast, the terrain ascends toward Howluk Butte, while isolated water points like Sailor Jack Spring and Big Sand Gap Spring provide critical landmarks across the township lines.
