Vale sits at the eastern edge of this landscape, serving as a hub for the agricultural operations that define the Vale Valley. The intricate network of irrigation infrastructure is the most striking feature of the area, with the Vale Oregon Main Canal, Farmers Ditch, and J-H Canal winding through the terrain to manage water from the Malheur River and Bully Cr. This system transforms the arid benches, such as East Bench and West Bench, into productive land. To the south, the terrain rises into more broken country characterized by drainage features like Negro Rock Canyon and Johnston Gulch. Local water sources are noted at Oil Well Spring and Thousand Springs, while aviation history is represented by the Miller Memorial Airpark.
