The tiny settlement of Valleton sits at the base of Indian Valley, where the surrounding Monterey County terrain is defined by a dense network of water-carved drainages and steep ridges. The landscape is dominated by the sprawling canyon systems of the Southern Coast Ranges, including the deeply etched Hare Canyon and Portuguese Canyon to the west. These narrow valleys and canyons historically dictated the movement of goods and people between the Salinas Valley and the interior hills.
