The upper reaches of the Carmel River and the Big Sur River converge in this high-elevation backcountry of Monterey County. The landscape is defined by its prominent summits, including Ventana Double Cone and South Ventana Cone, which dominate the central and southern portions of the terrain. This area, largely free of permanent settlements, is instead mapped by an intricate network of remote stations and trails.
