About this map

Owens Lake dominates the northern horizon of this landscape, its southern shoreline meeting the arid expanse of the Mojave Desert. The topography is defined by the sharp transition from the lake basin into the elevated terrain of the Coso Range, where the namesake Vermillion Canyon cuts through the earth. A rare water source, Dirty Socks Spring, is situated near the lakeshore, a vital landmark in this water-scarce environment. Historical access and remote travel are marked by several rugged routes including Lava Lk Rd, Fall Rd, and Cactus Flats Rd, which cross the township and range lines. The southeastern quadrant is characterized by the high, undulating contours of Red Ridge, providing a detailed look at the geological formations of Inyo County as they were documented in 2018.
