Canby serves as the primary gateway to this portion of the Modoc National Forest in northern California. The landscape is defined by the winding course of the Pit River, which is crossed by the Canby Bridge and flanked by several significant canyons and gulches, including Shake Canyon and Negro Gulch. Significant elevations such as Washington Mtn and Westlake Butte dominate the northern half, while Rucker Hill rises to the south.
