Watalula and the surrounding Franklin County hillsides are defined by a complex network of creeks and small family cemeteries that trace the settlement history of the Ozark National Forest borders. Small communities like White Oak, Mountain Grove, and Sutherland Crossroads occupy the lower elevations, while several mountain peaks, including Douglas Mtn, Mt Ephraim, and Carter Mtn, dominate the northern terrain. The landscape is heavily dissected by the Mulberry River and its numerous tributaries such as Cripple Br and N Fork White Oak Cr. Infrastructure like the Ozark-Franklin County Airport and the waters of Ozark City Lake show the modern development of the area near Ozark. Numerous rural burial grounds, including McLaughlin Cem, Handchew Cem, and Shiloh Cem, are scattered throughout, providing valuable locations for genealogical research and local history documentation.
