Large-scale agricultural operations and private airfields define this Central Valley landscape south of Bakersfield during the early 21st century. The terrain is dominated by a grid of named agricultural estates, including Koostra Dairy Farms, Richmar Farms Dairy, and the Rosa Dairy. These massive dairy and ranching operations are supported by a complex irrigation network, most notably the East Side Canal and the Kern Island Drain, which divert water across the flat basin.
