West Augusta sits at the junction of modern routes in a landscape defined by the deep valleys of the George Washington National Forest. The settlement pattern follows the narrow floor of the Calfpasture River valley, where the West Augusta Cem remains a central point for genealogical research. To the north and west, the terrain rises sharply toward Shenandoah Mountain and the high points of Hardscrabble Knob and The Pinnacle.

The area is characterized by a complex network of named mountain drainages, or drafts, such as Ramseys Draft and Johnson Draft. These waterways carve through prominent ridges like Bald Ridge and Springhouse Ridge. While much of the land is protected forest, the inclusion of features like Braley Pond and Stark Pond highlights the importance of managed water resources in this part of the Alleghenies.
